Fans of the Eagles Welcome Tim Tebow, Maybe Too Loudly

Fans of the Eagles Welcome Tim Tebow, Maybe Too Loudly

Quarterback Tim Tebow received a warm Philly welcome on Sunday.
Tebow threw for 69 yards and ran for a touchdown in his first game in two years, Kenjon Barner returned a punt 92 yards for a touchdown and ran for a score, and the Eagles beat the Indianapolis Colts, 36-10, in a preseason game in Philadelphia.
Tebow received a standing ovation when he entered the game midway through the third quarter, and the crowd roared so loud when his name was introduced that he gestured with his arms to plead for quiet because he was taking the snap in a shotgun.

“It’s very humbling, a blessing,” Tebow said. “I appreciated it.”
Tebow completed his first four passes, and fans chanted “Tebow! Tebow!” during his first series.
He dived into the pylon on a 7-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter and finished with 15 yards rushing on four carries. He completed 6 of 12 passes and was sacked twice.
“I liked how Timmy threw it,” Eagles Coach Chip Kelly said.

Tebow had not played since the 2013 preseason with the New England Patriots until the Eagles (1-0) signed him to compete with Matt Barkley for the No. 3 spot behind Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez. Barkley was 12 of 20 for 192 yards and one interception.

“Did some things decent and some things we have to work on,” Tebow said. “I have to be more consistent.”
Quarterback Andrew Luck was 5 of 6 for 43 yards for the Colts (0-1).

BILLS’ WYNN COULD MISS SEASONBuffalo Bills Coach Rex Ryan said the veteran defensive tackle Jarius Wynn could be lost for the season with a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Ryan called the injury “devastating” to both the Bills and Wynn, and said that Wynn would miss the season if an A.C.L. tear was confirmed.

Wynn was injured in Friday’s preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. He played 11 games for Buffalo last season, making two sacks and 17 tackles.

RAIDERS’ STREATER PRACTICES Oakland Raiders receiver Rod Streater has returned to practice after being taken off the nonfootball-illness list. Streater practiced for the first time this summer on Sunday after missing more than two weeks with an undisclosed illness.

Streater missed the final 13 games last season with a broken foot. He was Oakland’s leading receiver in 2013, with 60 catches for 888 yards and four touchdowns. He is being counted on to team with the newcomers Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree to give Oakland a deeper receiving group.
Streater has 108 catches for 1,556 yards and eight touchdowns in 35 games.

SURGERY FOR BROWNS’ SHAW Connor Shaw, the Cleveland Browns’ third-string quarterback, will undergo surgery on his right thumb and be out indefinitely.

Shaw, who started Cleveland’s final game last season as a rookie, injured his thumb during the second half of Thursday’s preseason opener against Washington. He completed 5 of 10 passes for 64 yards in the 20-17 loss.

The Browns said Shaw would miss “an extended period of time.”

“I feel for Connor because he has worked extremely hard,” Coach Mike Pettine said. “He’s a competitor and has had a great off-season and a good camp so far.”
FALCONS CUT LOVE The Atlanta Falcons released offensive tackle DeMarcus Love and signed three players, including running back Evan Royster.

Royster, a sixth-round draft pick by the Redskins in 2011, adds depth to a position depleted by injuries. Running backs Devonta Freeman, Tevin Coleman and, most recently, Antone Smith have suffered hamstring injuries.

Smith was hurt while scoring a touchdown in the Falcons’ 31-24 preseason victory over the Tennessee Titans on Friday night.

Royster ran for 416 yards on 81 carries while with the Redskins from 2011 to 2013.

Love, listed as the third-team right tackle, played as a backup Friday against the Titans.
